{"id":5526,"date":"2020-11-18T15:09:09","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T12:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/?p=5526"},"modified":"2022-04-21T17:08:23","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T14:08:23","slug":"panel-lgbti-rights-in-turkey-and-poland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/eski\/2020\/11\/18\/panel-lgbti-rights-in-turkey-and-poland\/","title":{"rendered":"Panel: LGBTI+ Rights in Turkey and Poland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The panel&nbsp;<strong>LGBTI+ Rights in Turkey and Poland&nbsp;<\/strong>will be held online on November 18, Wednesday at 16.00 (GMT+3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may join the live-stream in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jB8xf6y1qg4&amp;feature=youtu.be\"><strong>Turkish<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zn95j8_FZ_w&amp;feature=youtu.be\"><strong>English<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized jointly by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hakikatadalethafiza.org\/en\/panel-lgbti-rights-in-turkey-and-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Haf\u0131za Merkezi<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/homepage_en\/\">Association for Monitoring Equal Rights<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.nl\/\">Netherlands Helsinki Committee<\/a>, the panel is part of a series titled&nbsp;<strong>Shrinking Democratic Spaces and International Solidarity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panel speakers are&nbsp;<strong>Karolina Gierdal<\/strong>,&nbsp;General Coordinator of Kampania Przeciw Homofobii (Campaign Against Homophobia) and&nbsp;<strong>Aylime Asl\u0131 Demir<\/strong>, Academic and Cultural Studies Coordinator of <a href=\"https:\/\/kaosgl.org\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/kaosgl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kaos GL<\/a>. Journalist and researcher Sezin \u00d6ney will moderate the talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this panel, we want to discuss the&nbsp;changing dynamics of LGBT+ activism in the context of rising populism and&nbsp;Covid-19, and the forms of struggle&nbsp;in response to these challenges. Some of the issues and questions&nbsp;we want to address with respect to both Turkey and Poland are;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The background developments that led to the current hostile political environment on LGBT+ rights,<\/li><li>The nature of the populist discourses with respect to the LGBTI+ rights,<\/li><li>How and why the&nbsp;Istanbul Convention has been targeted by both governments?<\/li><li>The changing methods and approaches of LGBTI+ movement in response to these hostile developments,<\/li><li>The specific challenges created by Covid-19 for LGBTI+ activism, and the responses to it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/KONUS\u0327MACILAR-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5528\" width=\"236\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/eski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/KONUS\u0327MACILAR-1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/eski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/KONUS\u0327MACILAR-1-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Karolina Gierdal<\/strong>&nbsp;is an attorney, member of the Bar Association in Warsaw and the Human Rights Section of the District Bar Council in Warsaw. Since 2017, she has been running a law firm providing legal assistance to people who are discriminated against. Since the same year, she has also been associated with the Campaign Against Homophobia (KPH): first as a member of the association\u2019s Legal Group, and since 2018, as its coordinator and member of the KPH team. As a member of KPH Legal Group, Gierdal has taken part in numerous strategic litigation cases before Poland\u2019s Supreme Court, Constitutional Tribunal and European Court of Human Rights. She also defends the defendants for infringement of the personal rights of the authors of the \u201cHate Atlas\u201d, a monitoring project in response to municipalities and regions of Poland that have declared themselves unwelcoming of an alleged \u201cLGBT-free-zones\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/KONUS\u0327MACILAR-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/eski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/KONUS\u0327MACILAR-2.png 300w, https:\/\/www.esithaklar.org\/eski\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/KONUS\u0327MACILAR-2-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aylime Asl\u0131 Demir<\/strong>&nbsp;is trained in Public Management, Political Science and Women Studies. Since 2010, she\u2019s been working as editor and curator in various exhibitions and publications, dealing with the politics and aesthetics of bringing together a wide range of information and practices. Demir is chief editor of Kaos Q+, Turkey\u2019s first and only peer-reviewed queer studies journal, and is the running director of Ankara Queer Art Program Artists Residency.
